“A Sense of Shared Mission: The Maxwell School/Teach For America Connection”
In recognition of the 90th anniversary of the Maxwell School, a panel consisting of Teach For America/Maxwell alums will take place during Orange Central, SU’s homecoming and reunion weekend. Panelists who joined TFA after graduating from Syracuse University will discuss how their experiences at SU influenced their decision to become a member of TFA. Those who entered the MPA program after serving with TFA, will talk about how their TFA experience impacted their graduate studies and how both experiences shaped their subsequent careers.

Professor Cora True-Frost ’01 MPA/JD
Professor True-Frost is assistant professor of law at the Syracuse University College of Law. Her scholarship draws from the areas of international relations theory, administrative law, and public international law. She teaches classes in international and domestic criminal law and international human rights law. As a Climenko Fellow at Harvard Law School, she co-taught with Dean Minow and Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo a seminar on the Role of the Prosecutor in the International Criminal Court.
In her legal practice, she worked at the Judicial Systems Monitoring Programme in East Timor where she published the first report on women’s access to the formal justice sector and established a Women’s Justice Unit. She also served as legal consultant to the Fofana Defense Team before the Special Court for Sierra Leone, led the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security at UN headquarters, and was a litigation associate at Cravath, Swaine and Moore LLP. Professor True-Frost was a Fellow at the Safra Foundation for Ethics and the Professions at Harvard University, earned an LLM from Harvard Law School as a Gammon Fellow and a JD/MPA magna cum laude as one of two Law Fellows at Syracuse College of Law and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Prior to law school, Professor True-Frost taught middle school English and social studies for two years each in Baltimore with the Teach For America program and in Harlem at a Teach For America-friendly school. She has traveled through over 60 countries and she holds a BA in philosophy and sociology from Trinity University.

Dana Twyman ‘01 BA (PSt)
Dana Twyman lives in Philadelphia and is a school transformation facilitator at Johns Hopkins University. She taught seventh grade literacy in NYC while a Teach For America corps member. Since then, she has worked in the nonprofit sector supporting students, teachers and administrators, in and out of school settings. She spent the last five years working with Diplomas Now in Philadelphia. Diplomas Now is a collaborative effort between three national nonprofit organizations that provides comprehensive support services to students in middle and high schools. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Dana served as the Diplomas Now program director for City Year Greater Philadelphia. Dana has also trained teachers to conduct service-learning projects with Need in Deed, and directed youth and family programs throughout Philadelphia. Dana earned a BA in policy studies at Syracuse University in 2001, a Master of Science in Teaching at Pace University, and a Master of Public Policy at the University of Michigan.

Alex Payne ’12 MPA
Alex came to Maxwell after teaching in rural North Carolina through Teach For America. While at Maxwell, he interned for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and tutored through the Say Yes to Education program. After graduating he joined the Obama campaign as an advance staffer. Alex later moved to Washington, DC, to work for the nonprofit, Partnership for Public Service. Subsequently Alex was selected as the TFA Capitol Hill fellow with Congressman Rush Holt (NJ-12) handling education and tax issues. He now works for Mr. Holt as an education and healthcare legislative assistant. Alex also tutors students through the DC nonprofit Horton’s Kids. Alex earned a BS in policy analysis and management from Cornell University and an MPA at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School.
Robert Magliaro ’08 BS (Econ/PSt/IR)
Rob Magliaro is co-founder of the Urban Assembly School for Emergency Management (UASEM), a career and technical education high school located in downtown Manhattan. Rob came to education through Teach For America where he taught math in grades seven to twelve in the South Bronx. He has also helped support teachers and students as an instructional lead and data coach. Prior to teaching Rob worked at the Pennsylvania governor’s office, for the mayor of Syracuse, and Lovell’s International Law Firm in Hong Kong. Originally from West Chester, Pennsylvania, Rob earned a BS as a triple major in public policy, economics, and international relations from Syracuse University where he graduated as a University Scholar.
Patricia Leon-Guerrero ’04 BA (PSt/Soc)
Patricia is the managing director of Latino engagement and partnerships For Teach For America, the national corps of outstanding college graduates and professionals who commit to teach and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity for all. In her role as managing director, Patricia collaborates and manages TFA’s national partnerships with top Latino nonprofit organizations to ensure that TFA is enlisting the best and brightest Hispanic leaders. Patricia has served in a number of other capacities with TFA after serving as part of the 2004 Las Vegas Valley Charter corps. As a America corps member, she led 62 scholars to academic success, while earning a Masters in Elementary Education from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. She served for three years with TFA, co-founding the first parent teacher association for her elementary school, in which she helped raised $10,000 for the students and staff. Born in Ft. Stewart, GA she calls Colorado Springs, CO her hometown. While at SU, she pursued a degree in public policy, sociology, and Spanish. Patricia is also an alumna of the National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) where she completed her leadership fellowship at Georgetown University in May of 2012.

Public Affairs
The undergraduate policy studies major is offered by the Public Affairs Department at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs (the #1 rated public affairs school in the USA) and the College of Arts and Sciences.
The major is completed through coursework from several academic departments. You will acquire skills in report writing, problem-solving, information gathering, computer applications, quantitative analysis, and working in teams as you study major public policy issues. Not only is the program both hands-on and interdisciplinary, but it also offers a wide variety of electives to choose from.

Public Administration

As a Syracuse alumna (’12) who completed TFA and returned to Syracuse to obtain a MPA (’15), I am very excited about this event. Maxwell fostered a commitment to public service in me during my undergraduate studies, which motivated me to join TFA and drove me to return to Maxwell for graduate school. Thank you to the Alumni office for putting the event together!
